Alaska RCV-Hare election happening today
-
There was an open primary where a HUGE field of candidates was narrowed down to 4. Even Santa Claus was running.
Then one dropped out, so it is only 3 that will be in the ranked choice general election today.
Interestingly, the election will likely be won by a polarizing Republican, none other than Sarah Palin. My guess is that ranked choice makes it harder for her to win, but she still will mostly because she's super famous.
Maybe this is a good thing. Republicans and extremists often don't like ranked choice, because they think it disfavors them. Maybe being able to say "even Sarah Palin can win under ranked choice" will weaken their resolve against it. Who knows.
Meanwhile in the senate race, Lisa Murkowski is predicted to win (today is the open primary for her election, the general election, which is ranked choice, is later). She is pretty centrist: she is a Republican, but was censured for voting to impeach following 1/6. I say that's a good thing if open primary and RCV picks a candidate that is moderate in such ways.
Still I'm glad to see another state moving in mostly the right direction. Maybe I should say, the correct direction.
