https://www.npmjs.com/package/nodebb-plugin-latex looks as though it would address this desire. I feel sketchy about the risk of breaking anything; the safest thing to do would be to set up a test site and try it out. I don't know when I will want to go to the effort.

@jack-waugh Is there some reason you are particularly concerned? Seems like it would be easy enough to uninstall if there are problems. Given the low number of active users I wouldn't worry that much about the risk. It appears to be a simple plug in, the vast bulk of the work being done by katex.js.
