Definitely agree with "@rob said in Way too many categories:

The main problem we are trying to solve, to me, is the politically-based polarization that is tearing apart society and preventing us from working together for a common goal."

I am a late-comer to this conversation, but will offer that how the forum frames itself to new registrants (and current registrants) can make a significant difference in encouraging posting "tone". Clear introductions re our expectations, both prior to official registration and perhaps as a prominent sticky to regularly remind posters might help.

Being personally active in both Campaign Finance Reform and Voting Theory communities, I do recommend separating those quite different topics. My estimate is that posters will rarely confuse them, and moderators can move the few exceptions. That guidance will encourage us all to take both topics seriously.

If we want to build this site as a go-to priority for people who appreciate serious, respectful, objective discourse for our chosen topic arenas, we can encourage our members to promote us to relevant communities in which they are already involved.

    • Hi from Gary

Gary Lietke here, from Portland, Oregon, USA. While I don't claim to be a math guru or voting science expert, I have been seriously dedicated in the past half-decade or more to learning from those who are. My bias is grounded in academic research methodology and statistical outcomes, yet sensitive to finding pragmatic and fair decision-making that empowers diverse and representative democracy--democracy that encourages people to participate and work together ongoing, whether their voices are majority or minority.

My goal is voting system(s) that are user-friendly and voter-motivating, and yet as secure, reliable, and expressive as possible. Achieving these objectives is a tough challenge, but failing them is often why way too many people are frustrated and untrusting of how we elect decision-makers and resultingly, their decisions and leadership. Politics throughout the world, frankly is getting worse rather than better, so expeditiously developing worthy voting system answers, and then convincing decision-makers to adopt them, is a indeed a high calling.

I am glad to help moderate this forum so that as a forum we are productive, effective, and stay on-track.
